Google search integrates AI function, which is criticized by roast for being slow and lengthy
On June 5th, Google launched an experimental feature called Search Generation Experience (SGE) in May this year, which utilizes Google's artificial intelligence system to summarize search results for users. This way, users don't have to click on a bunch of links, and Google will directly tell them the information they want to know. In theory, this means that users' search queries can be more complex and natural, while Google can still answer users' questions. What is the experience with this feature? The foreign media TheVerge conducted testing.
TheVerge conducted several days of testing on SGE and found the following issues:
- The response from SGE takes several seconds to display, which makes people feel impatient. During the waiting process, a blank colored box will appear on the screen with loaded animation inside. When the search results are finally loaded, the colored box will expand and Google's summary will pop up, pushing down the list of links below. The Verge editor said he really doesn't like waiting for this process. If it's not for testing, he may immediately scroll the page and click on the link directly.
- SGE's answers are usually lengthy and confusing. For example, when searching for 'Where can I watch Ted Lasso?', the answer generated by artificial intelligence has two paragraphs, and the answer is correct. It can be viewed on Apple TV+, which charges $6.99 per month. But there is still a lot of redundancy in the answer. On the desktop version, Google will display a card with source information on the right, but users cannot easily determine which information comes from which sources. On the mobile version, the card will appear below the summary text.
When asked "Where can I buy Kingdom Tears?", the result was a mess, with a huge sponsor card and a confusing list of suggested retail stores displayed above the results. After clicking, there was no game list, and there was also a Google map that accurately located these retail stores. There were three link cards on the right, where you can find ways to purchase games. Searching for second-hand red iPhone 13 Mini is not much better.
- SGE sometimes fails and even cannot generate answers for some of the most popular search terms, such as "YouTube," "Amazon," "Wordle," "Twitter," and "Roblox," which all return an error message: "Artificial intelligence overview does not apply to this search." However, words such as "Facebook," "Gmail," "Apple," and "Netflix" can all display SGE formatted answers normally, But the results also take a long time to display.
In summary, TheVerge believes that SGE does not provide a better search experience, but rather makes people feel restless and waste time.
