Analysis shows that Apple Vision Pro headsets will bring new opportunities to Sony and other Asian VR/AR suppliers
On June 7, it was reported by Nihon Keizai Shimbun that the Vision Pro head display released by Apple yesterday may bring new sales space to Sony and other Asian suppliers, but it depends on how the device performs in the disappointing VR market for many years.
Goldman Sachs stated in a report released last month that Vision Pro may have used OLED micro displays from Sony and polymer optical resins from Mitsubishi Gas Chemical for precision lenses. In addition, TSMC, the world's largest chip foundry, may be responsible for supplying chips to the corresponding equipment.
As of now, both Sony and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical have declined to comment on their supply chain relationship with Apple.
Apple previously stated that it has nearly 1000 suppliers in Japan, including Sony, Murata Manufacturing, Kyocera, and Nippon Electric. In 2022, Apple announced that its spending on the Japanese supply chain has exceeded $100 billion since 2018.
However, the overall market size of VR devices is still very small. DSCC, an American research company, released a report in May stating that sales of displays for VR and related purposes will increase by 18% year-on-year this year, reaching 16 million units. By comparison, global smartphone shipments this year may exceed 1 billion units.
DSCC also stated that the sales of VR devices in recent years have been disappointing, and it is expected that the sales of Apple's Vision Pro may also be small from the beginning.
Analysts believe that content will be the key to stimulating demand for VR hardware. VR and AR technologies are currently mainly used for games and some commercial design applications, which limits their application scope. A senior executive from a large electronic component manufacturer in Japan claimed, "In this world, the success of a product depends not only on hardware, but also on software. But before the product goes on sale, you cannot determine whether it can be sold
